St. Nazaire, France Memorial

A.E.F. Memorial in St. Nazaire Harbor.
With outstreached arms and a sword in his hand,
a doughboy stands on the back of a giant eagle that has just landed.

Dedicated to the US Army Expeditionary Forces
of World War One, at St. Nazaire, France,
their landing place April, 1917.

It was designed by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, Sculptress,
with Studio in New York City.

My father, Florence J. McAuliffe was a sculptor in her employ
and worked on creating this monument.

The monument was destroyed by the Nazis during their occupation of France in 1940.

St. Nazaire became an important Nazi Submarine Base in WW-II....

I retain to this day the cast iron eagle's claw which was used as a model for the monument.

A British raid in which an explosives packed destroyer was rammed into the lock gates of the dry dock, killing 250 Germans and putting the lock out of action for the remaider of the war has been hailed as the greatest special forces raid of all time.

  • Per Mr. John McAuliffe:<br /> <br /> My Grandfather, Timothy J.McAuliffe sc, designed and sculpted this Irish High Cross at his studio here in Worcester. <br /> <br /> This monument is just Beautiful!<br /> <br /> It is all hand carved, without electric tools. <br /> <br /> It was the first Irish Cross in St. John Cemetery. <br /> It is on the grave of Andrew Athy, who had an Undertaker Funeral business here. <br /> <br /> His grandson, Anthony now runs the business...<br /> <br /> The copper likeness of Athy was also done by Timothy...<br /> <br /> The original was stolen, pryed off the monument a few years ago...<br /> but Anthony had a spare...My dad worked for while with T.J.....but later at the Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney Studio in NYC...until his sickness and death.<br /> <br /> Now you know why I like and have an interest in monuments,<br /> and enjoy the talent of these sculptors of the various VBOB monuments...<br /> <br /> John

  • Per John McAuliffe:<br /> <br /> Sculptress Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney with her WW-I sculpture, dedicated to the American soldiers, stands at Mitchell Square,<br /> near the Bronx, NYC. <br /> <br /> She served with the Red Cross in France during WW-I. <br /> <br /> Florence J. McAuliffe, sculptor in her employ, <br /> did much of the work on this statue. <br /> <br /> It was dedicated around 1921.
